Dr Michael Häupl Visits the Danube Tower

In 2020, former Mayor of Vienna Dr Michael Häupl visited the Danube Tower. In the video, one of the most influential figures in Vienna’s recent political history speaks about his city, its most beautiful places and the unique view from Austria’s tallest landmark.

A Mayor Who Shaped Vienna for Decades

Dr Michael Häupl served as Mayor and Governor of Vienna from November 1994 until May 2018. With more than 23 years in office, he was the longest-serving democratically elected mayor in the city’s history.

During his time in office, Vienna underwent significant development. The city grew, new urban districts emerged and Vienna increasingly established itself internationally as a modern, liveable and cosmopolitan metropolis. In 2019, Michael Häupl was granted honorary citizenship of the City of Vienna in recognition of his achievements.

As Vienna’s long-serving mayor, he knows the city, its transformation and its special places better than almost anyone else.

Vienna Viewed from Above

The Danube Tower offers a perspective from which Vienna’s urban development becomes immediately visible. From the observation levels, the view extends across the Donaupark, the Danube and Donaustadt to the historic city centre and far beyond the city limits.

For a former mayor, this panoramic view is naturally connected with many memories. From a height of 150 metres, visitors can see not only historic Vienna, but also the modern city that has developed around the Danube over recent decades.

In the video recorded in 2020, Dr Michael Häupl speaks about Vienna and some of its most beautiful features. His reflections highlight how closely the Danube Tower is connected with the city’s identity and development.

The Danube Tower as Part of Vienna’s History

The Danube Tower was constructed for the Vienna International Garden Show in 1964. Since its opening, it has been one of the city’s most distinctive structures and is much more than an observation tower.

For generations, it has been a destination for family excursions, special celebrations, official visits and personal memories. At the same time, the panoramic view from the tower documents Vienna’s continuous transformation. While the cityscape changes, new buildings are constructed and entire districts develop, the Danube Tower remains a highly visible point of orientation.

Dr Michael Häupl’s visit is therefore also an important piece of Vienna’s contemporary history. The video created in 2020 preserves the personal perspective of a former mayor on his city and one of its most famous landmarks.
