Austria Celebrates World Cup Opening Victory at the Danube Tower Public Viewing
A historic football morning brought excitement to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Public Viewing at the Danube Tower Vienna on June 17, 2026. Numerous fans gathered from 6:00 AM onwards to watch Austria’s opening World Cup match against Jordan at the Immersive Center at the foot of the Danube Tower.
For Austria, it was a special moment: after 28 years, the national team returned to the biggest stage in international football. The anticipation was equally high among visitors, who watched the match together while enjoying a special all-you-can-eat breakfast.
Austria Opens FIFA World Cup 2026™ with a 3–1 Victory
Ralf Rangnick’s team secured a 3–1 win against Jordan in its opening FIFA World Cup 2026™ group-stage match, earning important points in the race for qualification to the knockout stage.
Romano Schmid gave Austria the lead with a spectacular long-range strike. After Jordan equalised through Ali Ulwan, the Austrian national team found the decisive breakthrough in the closing stages. An own goal by Jasan al-Arab restored Austria’s advantage before Marko Arnautović converted a penalty in stoppage time to secure the final 3–1 result.
With this victory, Austria celebrated its first FIFA World Cup win since 1990 and established a strong position for the remaining group-stage matches.

To match the early kickoff time, the Austria match was hosted as a Special Event Day. Visitors enjoyed an extensive breakfast buffet while watching the game together on giant screens.
