Last-Minute Qualification! Kalajdzic Heads Austria into the Round of 32

June 28, 2026: What a match! The FIFA World Cup group-stage clash between Austria and Algeria turned into one of the tournament's most dramatic encounters. Despite the early 4:00 a.m. kick-off, numerous football fans gathered at the Danube Tower to cheer on the Austrian national team during a memorable public viewing event.

Austria started the match confidently and took a deserved lead through Marko Arnautović in the 28th minute. Just before halftime, Algeria equalized to make it 1-1. After the break, Marcel Sabitzer restored Austria's advantage, but Algeria fought back once again and even appeared to secure victory with a dramatic goal in the 93rd minute.

With Austria seemingly heading out of the tournament, the team refused to give up. Deep into stoppage time, in the 96th minute, substitute Sasa Kalajdzic rose above the defense and powered a header into the net to make it 3-3. The dramatic equalizer secured second place in Group J and sent Austria into the Round of 32, marking the country's first appearance in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage since 1982.

The celebrations at the Danube Tower were unforgettable. Fans embraced, cheered, and celebrated together as the final whistle confirmed Austria's place in the knockout stage. Despite the early morning kick-off, the atmosphere was extraordinary and demonstrated the incredible passion of Austrian football supporters.

Austria's reward was a knockout clash against Spain in Los Angeles. Regardless of the outcome of the tournament, the unforgettable comeback against Algeria will remain one of the defining moments of Austria's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the Austrian national team for their determination, fighting spirit, and unforgettable performance. We also thank all the fans who turned the Danube Tower into a sea of red, white, and red at four o'clock in the morning and created an atmosphere that will be remembered for years to come.
